In the heart of Central Queensland lies a tropical wonderland. Carnarvon Gorge is 30km long and 600m deep, and is famous for its ancient white sandstone cliffs up to 200m high. Walk amongst towering tree palms, eucalypts and she-oaks that date back millions of years.With an oasis-like feel, the gorge's numerous springs and creeks are surrounded by pockets of lush rainforest.

It's a great place to see wildlife, whether you're interested in birdwatching or keen to see a platypus or kangaroos laze in the sun. But do not forget to see the many other native animals that inhabit the park. Each season highlights different features of Carnarvon Gorge, making any time a great time to visit.

The winter months offer cool to cold nights with clear sunny days - perfect for bushwalking. The warmer months of summer make exploring the cool rainforest a pleasant experience.

Carnarvon Gorge can be explored over an extended period of time or at short intervals, however, to really capture its true beauty, it is recommended you take at least three days to walk the 21 kilometre track to explore the many side gorges and Aboriginal art sites.

Carnarvon Gorge may be reached by car (including caravans) any time throughout the year. It is a comfortable 9 hr drive from Brisbane, and just 3 hrs from Emerald or Roma. The final 22km is unsealed and an updated road conditions report is available through information centres. PETROL: please note that there are no petrol facilities in the area. Be sure to fill-up in Injune or Rolleston.
