Freshwater Fishing
Hook, Line and Sinker......Freshwater Fishing!
The Capricorn Region is home to many real places, real experiences and real people where the fishing is unlike anywhere else. Fishing in Capricorn appeals to the experienced angler right through to the 'once-a-year' holiday fisherman. You can discover a wide range of secret spots where the fish are plentiful and just waiting to be caught.
Freshwater fishing offers enthusiasts access to the mighty Fitzroy River which is situated in the heart of Rockhampton. Some of Australia's iconic fish inhabit the waters of the Fitzroy including barramundi, yellowbelly and the murray cod. While fishing from a boat is an advantage, it is not essential as there are many fishing piers and decks that are available for your use.
Enjoy fishing spots around the Capricorn Region that are simply beautiful with the company of nature and that feeling of solitude whilst relaxing.
Most areas are easily accessible for everyone who enjoys angling. The main freshwater fishing areas in the region are: Fairbairn Dam, Mount Morgan Dam, Baralaba Weir, Bedford Weir and the Fitzroy River Barrage as well as the popular areas of Callide Dam and Lake Awoonga to the south.
The Capricorn Region is also home to many fishing events and competitions which take place throughout the year. Why not try your luck in the Moura Apec Fishstocking Group event or the Rocky Barra Bounty or maybe even the Baralaba Recreation and Fishstocking group event, just to name a few.
Before you embark on your Capricorn Region inland fishing adventure, be sure to read the new fishing restrictions and regulations which have been recently introduced. These include size and bag limits. A full list of the new rules and regulations can be found on the Department of Primary Industries website.
Good luck and enjoy your fishing just as much as the locals do!
